Culver City is suppose to be an up and coming place food, but this particular Culver City gastropub has been around for around 4+ years. From the reviews and my initial impression of the menu, I thought Waterloo & City would be a good place to try. I’ve always drove past here on my way to the marina, and I’ve always noticed a full parking lot.

This is restaurant #9 on my LA food expedition.

Note for 2022 migration: this is an old post from my other defunct blog. This restaurant ended up closing at the end of 2014.

Food

Chicken liver mousse, sweet potato jam, toast, pickles. This was pretty good. The pate was very soft and tasted just as you would expect. The liver wasn’t really all that grimy. It’s comparable to Westside Tavern’s chicken liver pate in taste and quality. In case if you were wondering, the green thing with a stem is a super-sized caper.

Duck and walnut country pate. I don’t remember all the ingredients in this, but the pate was pretty hard (obviously because of the walnut). It did taste good though, although I prefer the chicken liver.

Tart flambe, fried egg, smoked mozzarella, peas, caramelized onions. My buddy informed me that this didn’t look like the tart flambe he has had in France. It looked more like a quiche if anything. The actual thing was just ok. The innards were mushy, and it does taste like a quiche.

Beef wellington, bacon wrapped asparagus, red wine sauce. I’ve never had beef wellington, so I had some expectations that this was going to be good. It was actually pretty plain for the most part. The beef wasn’t marinated at all though it was tender at medium rare temperature. It literally tasted like beef wrapped in bread. The bacon wrapped asparagus was surprisingly pretty good, though bacon with anything is good.

Final Verdict

In the end, the meal itself was very affordable and was surprisingly decent. Because there are some British influences in the menu, some of the things we ate were pretty plain. The atmosphere is pretty loud, so I imagine this isn’t the best place to go to if you wanted to be heard at normal conversation levels. They do have a decent sized bar with wine and beer. I definitely would come back here again if friends are in town.
